Abstract
1408111 Polyamines NALCO CHEMICAL CO 18 June 1972 [20 Sept 1972] 28795/73 Heading C3R Polyamines are prepared from dimethylamine, ammonia and epichlorohydrin by (A) preparing an aqueous solution of dimethylamine and ammonia, wherein the ammonia is present in a concentration of 0À1 to 60% by weight based on said dimethylamine; (B) adding the epichlorohydrin over a period of 1 to 40 hours to the solution prepared in step (A) while maintaining the reaction temperature between 25‹ to 100‹C., wherein the total amount of epichlorohydrin added to the solution is 65 to 110% by weight based on said dimethylamine and ammonia; (C) adding an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide to maintain a pH of above 4 while the polymer is formed; (D) adjusting the pH to not less than 3À0 with an acid; and (E) separating and isolating the dimethylamine - epichlorohydrin - ammonia polymer product. The polymer is used for the flocculation of suspended matter in aqueous media particularly where the presence of chlorine would impair the efficiency of other coagulants. Examples are given.
