Abstract

1468351 Data processing SCHLUMBERGER Ltd 31 May 1974 [1 May 1973 1 April 1974] 20610/73 and 14306/74 Heading G4A Three dimensional representations of earth formation features are produced by computer from measurements indicative of dip and azimuth in a borehole. Signals from a plurality of measurement pads 19-22 on a diameter are processed by conventional cross correlation and averaging techniques to determine displacements between points on a corresponding dip plane whose dip # and azimuth # are then output, B, as representative of a given depth D(I). Apparent dips #<SP>1</SP> and #<SP>11</SP> are computed for two planes P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>11</SP> in different azimuths and traces corresponding to the apparent dips are produce 1 e.g. for real time display, as plots on corresponding sides of a line representing the intersection of the planes, e.g. at the borehole. The process is repeated for a series of depths D(I). The display illustrated represents simple planar surfaces as straight lines, but in practice modelling techniques are used to predict the behaviour of the surfaces at varying distances from the borehole. Structural models, e.g. for intersecting or faulted planes or cylindrical folding are discussed in detail.
