Abstract

1320579 Smoke detector FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO Ltd and STANLEY ELECTRIC CO Ltd 21 Sept 1970 [19 Sept 1969 26 Sept 1969 (2)] 44817/70 Heading G1A A smoke detecting apparatus, Fig. 2, allows smoke to be induced into the interior of an inner casing 6 by utilizing the static pressure difference between a flow path passing straight through a linear passage 7 in the base of the apparatus and a flow path passing around the cover 4 of the apparatus (see dotted lines); the smoke being drawn through because of the presence of an inlet 9 and an outlet 10 providing a passage between points of high and low pressure. Parallel light from a source 18 is directed towards the centre of the casing 6 and a detector 14, Fig. 3 positioned so as not to be illuminated directly by the source, receives light scattered by the smoke particles. Ambient light is substantially prevented from entering the inside of the casing by a shield 11 positioned as shown between the outlet 10 and a further outlet 8 which is covered by wire mesh. As indicated by arrow 15' there can be a second flowpath around inner casing 6 and underneath cover 4 entering by way of a suitable opening at the base of the cover. In a modification Fig. 10 two parallel reflecting surfaces 3-1' and 3-1"are positioned inside the casing so as to reflect the light beam several times in a concentric manner through smoke passing through the centre of the casing 6. In further modifications a cylindrical reflecting surface is employed to reflect and concentrate the light rays in the central portion of the casing, or the light detector is shielded so as to receive scattered light from only the central portion of the casing.
