Abstract
1379271 Flywheel driven vehicles A L NASVYTIS 24 Jan 1972 3264/72 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] A flywheel driven vehicle includes a flywheel 38 mounted for rotation about a vertical axis, a motor 20 connected to the flywheel via a oneway clutch 27, and transmission means including an infinitely variable gear-box 15, propeller shaft 14 and differential 13 which connect the flywheel to the driving wheels 11. The motor 20, e.g. an I.C. engine, is used to " re-charge " the flywheel and is started by a speed responsive switch 38a when the speed of the flywheel falls below a minimum value and is stopped by the switch 38a when the speed of the flywheel reaches its maximum value. The engine 20 is automatically controlled to run at its rated r.p.m. The gear-box 15 has a ratio range which can be varied continuously from infinity to one by a pedal 60, the speed of the vehicle being controlled solely by the pedal 60. The flywheel 38 is mounted in an evacuated housing 40 which can move along arcute guides to allow precession of the flywheel (shown dotted, Fig. 2) when the vehicle rolls when cornering. The flywheel 38 is connected by a clutch 39 to a bevel gear 36 which is connected via bevel gears 35, 31 and 30 to an input-output shaft 28, 34. The input shaft 28 is connected to the motor 20 via one-way clutch 27 and the output shaft 34 is connected to the gear-box 15. The flywheel 38 may be maintained at its maximum speed when garaged by an electric motor 61 which can be connected to household electric supply by connector 62.
