Abstract

1371868 Manufacture of glass filaments JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 14 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 52467/72 Heading C1M Apparatus for producing wound packages of strand 30 for glass or like heat softenable material, comprises at least one vessel (6) with at least one channel 7, 8 for molten glass; a plurality of bushings 12 in each channel each having an array of orifice tips 11 for flowing a group of streams to form filaments 16, the bushings 12 being aligned in a single line in a wall of the channel 7, 8; a plurality of filament gathering wheels 25; and a plurality of strand winders 15, the strand winders 15 being arranged in two rows 31, 32 with successive winders 15 in each row for winding strands 30 from alternate bushings so that bushings with strands to either row 31, 32 are separated by bushings with strands leading to the other row 32, 31. Preferably the channels 7, 8 and rows 31, 32 are parallel and articles 14 are left between the rows 32 of channel 7 and 31 of channel 8 and so on. The filaments 16 are protected adjacent tips 11 by shields 18 and may be sprayed from sprayheads 21 or dressed with liquids by rolls 23 of an applicator assembly 24. The strands 30 are wound on collets 33, for example, three strands are directed on to each collet 33 by traverse mechanism 35.
