Abstract

1288744 Steel composition INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 10 Oct 1969 [10 Oct 1968 1 Jan 1969] 48086/68 and 97/69 Heading C7A A maraging steel comprises:- Co 7-9À5% Mo 3-5À5% Ni 23-26% Ti 0À15-0À7% Al 0-0À5% B 0-0À01% Be 0-0À5% C up to 0À03% Cu 0-2% Mn 0-1% Nb 0-3% Si 0-0À5% V 0-2% and Zr 0-0À1% the balance, apart from residual amounts of Co and Mg and the lowest possible amounts of H, O, P and S, being Fe; and has an M S temperature of 20‹ to -70‹ C. Up to 5%W may replace some or all of the Mo with a ratio of 2 parts W for each part of Mo replaced. The steel may be hot worked at 1250-1050‹C. with a suitable finishing temperature of 800-900‹ C; intermediate anneals in the cold working may be at 800-850‹ C.; the last cold working step should leave the steel in the martensitic state in which it can be aged at 400-500‹ C., but if the required transformation is not complete the steel may be cooled to at least -78‹C. and preferably to -196‹C.
