Abstract
1,272,741. Periscopes. ERNST LEITZ G.m.b.H. Oct. 9, 1964 [Feb. 15, 1964], No. 41424/64. Heading G2J. A periscope has a telescope head 2 which can be rotated step-by-step independently of the eyepiece 16. A Maltese Cross gear mechanism 6, 6a rotates the head via a ring gear 8. The gear 6 is driven by an electric motor 11 which can be rotated in either direction and stopped at will. A shaft 9a is rotated intermittently by the Maltese Cross gear mechanism and rotates a rotation correcting prism 14, and a shutter 17 which interrupts the sight line when the head viewing field is being changed. In a modification, Figs.3 and 4 (not shown), a second optical path is provided which does not rotate; the image from this source is superimposed on the main view in such a way that it is not obscured by the shutter. The line of sight can be adjusted relative to the horizontal plane by tilting mirror 3 by means of motor 4 which may also be part of a stabilizing system. Lens system 20, 21 provides variable magnification.
