Abstract

1,113, 440. Sampling gases: testing for leaks. MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE FISHERIES & FOOD. July 15, 1965 [July 15, 1964], No.29097/64. Headings G1B and G1S. A tool for use in testing sealed containers for leaks or for sampling the gases inside a sealed container for analysis comprises a barb-shaped container piercing member 5 attached to a shaft 4 with a handle 9 a tube 3 for conveying gas to or from a container and a resilient tubular member 12 surrounding the member 5 for sealing the aperture formed by the member 5 in the container whilst the testing or sampling is being carried out the arrangement being such that the member 12 contacts and seals against the container before it is pierced by the member 5. A rubber tube 10 surrounds the shaft 4 and serves as a sealing member and as a return spring for the piercing member 5. The shaft 4 is formed with a lip 6 seating against an inner resilient member 11 and forming a valve in the gas line to a container being tested. When testing for leaks the container is pierced by pressing on the handle 9 and nitrogen is fed in through the tube 3, with the container held under water. When sampling gases inside a container the lip 6 may be dispensed with, and the gases drawn through the tube 3 to an analyzer.
