[Also in Division A4] A hinge for a sofa convertible to a bed is attached thereto by links 19, 20 and comprises two plates 16, 27 having a latch 32 coupled therebetween said latch hanging freely in the bed position as shown, and being jammed by an abutment 29 sliding in an arcuate slot 30 in the back plate 16 in the seat position. To convert the sofa from the bed to the seat position, a seat frame 14 is raised through 90‹ relative to a back frame 12 about a pivot point 25 in the direction of arrow 'a' when the abutment 29 on the seat hinge plate 27 strikes the end 31 of the slot 30 in the back hinge plate 16, said abutment also locating a notch 37 in the latch 32 suspended freely from a pin 33. The raised seat frame 14 is then pushed downwardly so that the latch moves from an extended position to a retracted position with respect to the pin 33 by reason of an arcuate slot 34, Fig. 5B (not shown), while the frames are rotated relative to one another until the abutment reaches a point (41), Fig. 3B (not shown) in the slot B30 when the latch is prevented from rotating further about its coupling pin 33. The frames then pivot together subtending a constant angle until the seat frame contacts the sofa base 15. To convert from the seat to the bed position, the seat is raised in the direction of the arrow 'b' in Fig. 3B (not shown) to an intermediate position as shown in Fig. 5B (not shown), when the back frame rests on the base (15), which with further upward movement of frame 14 causes the retracted latch 32 to pivot until the abutment 29 reaches the end 31 of slot 30, when the latch falls freely to be suspended under gravity, and the seat frame may be pushed downwardly to rest horizontally on the base 15. A further embodiment comprising a "dropback" bed is described in which the seat and back frames 14, 12 are reversed with the latter being affixed to the base 15 while pivotal links 19, 20 are removed or made inoperative.
