Abstract

[Also in Division C7] A composition comprises (A) a salt with a volatile base of a copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated compounds, the copolymer having pendant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, (B) a salt with a volatile base of a copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated compounds, the copolymer having pendent carboxyl and N- methylol and/or N-alkoxymethyl amide groups, and (C) a solvent which is partly or wholly miscible with water. Component (A) may be obtained by copolymerizing an unsaturated acid with an unsaturated alcohol or hydroxyalkyl ester of an unsaturated acid or by aftertreatment of a copolymer of an unsaturated acid with an epoxide or polyol. Component (B) is suitably obtained by reacting formaldehyde and, optionally, an alkanol with an acrylamide or methacrylamide copolymer with an unsaturated acid. In the examples component (A) is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and acrylic acid dissolved in ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and in the form of a salt with triethylamine, while component (B) is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, acrylamide and acrylic acid in the form of a salt with dimethyl-ethanolamine, after-treated with paraformaldehyde and either sec-butanol or n-butanol, and dissolved in either sec-butanol or n-butanol and ethylene glycolmonobutyl ether. These components are mixed, together with titanium dioxide pigment and water to form electrodepositable coatings which may be cured by heating.
