Abstract

1028184 Super-conductor devices GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 30 Oct 1962 2159/66 Divided out of 1028182 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A super-conductor body comprises an electrically conducting base material such as niobium having a filamentary network of super-conductor material such as tin or aluminium. Processes are described in which a niobium wire, which may first be cold worked as by sanding, drawing, shaving &c., is immersed in molten tin at 800‹ to 1100‹C for ¢ to 2 hours, and/or submitted to tin vapour at this temperature for 5 to 100 hours. The tin penetrates the niobium to form a filamentary network, the diameter of the tin filaments being preferably less than 1000‹ A. The processes may result in a tin sheath being provided in addition to the internal network. The wire may be wound into a coil at an intermediate stage in the process. In place of niobium wire, a niobium tube or a niobium coated tungsten wire may be used.
