Abstract
1,065,631. Tying bag necks; endless conveyers. BURFORD CO. March 25, 1964 [March 26, 1963], No. 12756/64. Headings B8A and B8C. [Also in Division F2] Gathering the necks of bags.- The open end B (Fig. 20A) of a bag is gathered by being pushed against a taut wire 144d. In the machine illustrated the neck of the bag is flattened by brushes 264, 266 rotating at a higher speed than the conveyer 59 carrying the bag, and the flattened neck is then moved along with a conveyer 77 by rollers 101, 103 to push it against the wire 144d. The wire is gripped at 144c between a fixed abutment 155R (Fig. 4) and the head 133 of a pivoted arm 132. Conveyers; stopping the movement of the bag.- The forward momentum of the bag A carries it from the continuously moving conveyer 59 on to arms (107) (Figs. 3 and 10, not shown) where it is brought to rest by a finger (129a). If a lever (111) is lowered to the position (115b) then the arms (107) drop below the conveyer 59, and by manually turning the wheel (127) so that all the arms (129) are below the conveyer 59, packages may travel straight through the machine without being tied up. Alternatively the lifting arm (107) may be dispensed with and the conveyer (500) (Fig. 49, not shown), which moves intermittently, provided with hooks (502) for gathering the bag neck. As a further alternative a continuously moving conveyer (518) (Fig. 50, not shown) may feed the package on to idler rollers (522), and the tied-up package is then pushed by the succeeding package on to a continuously moving conveyer (520). Tensioning the wire. The wire is fed from a reel (472) (Fig. 7, not shown), is passed between rollers (486), and is tensioned by a spring (488) and idler pulley (480). Passing the wire around the bag-neck and cutting it.-Head 139 (Fig. 20A) of an arm 135 carries the wire around the gathered neck and delivers it to the gap between a gripper 133 and an abutment 155L (Fig. 4). A lever 132 is then moved to clamp the wire against the abutment (155L), simultaneously cutting off portion 144d between no-operating blades 159 and 153L. Twisting the wire.-The ends of the wire are twisted together by three rotations of shaft 142d (Fig. 4), having an end piece 137 shaped to hold the wires. Removing tied-up bag.-After the neck B is tied the arm (129b) (Fig. 10, not shown) is raised to push the bag from the arms (107) thus disengaging the wire from the twisting means (137) and replacing the bag on conveyer 59. Stripper arm (134) also assists in disengaging the wire from the twisting means. Stop motions.-As the rod 296 (Fig. 7, not shown, and Fig. 20A) is moved by the flattened bag neck B a microswitch 292 is operated which causes the driving shaft to turn through one complete revolution and effect one complete tying operation.
