Abstract

A voltage or current regulator includes a series control device which is protected from excessive dissipation by a protection arrangement responding to the sum of voltages derived from the current through the device and the voltage across the device. As shown, a voltage regulator comprises input terminals 10 and a series device 12 controlled in known manner over an amplifier 16 to maintain a constant voltage at output terminals 11. The impedance of the device 12 is also controlled by the output of an amplifier 18 which receives a first input proportional to the load current and derived from a resistor R, and a second input proportional to the voltage across the device 12 and derived from a voltage divider R1, R2; the amplifier 18 is arranged to be ineffective if its input is less than a critical value, but if this value is exceeded, amplifier 18 overrides the control effected by amplifier 16 and thereafter controls the device 12 to prevent excessive dissipation in the device. Backing voltage source 20, which may relate to the input voltage of the regulator, and a diode 21 determine the minimum voltage across the device 12 necessary to cause a voltage to be developed across resistor R1. The devices 12, 16, 18 may comprise transistors, and the devices 14, 20 may include Zener diodes, Fig.4 (not shown). Modifications are described with reference to Figs. 5, 8 and 9 (not shown). The circuit may be modified to maintain a constant current output by omitting the voltage controlled amplifier 16.
