Für die Wiedergabe von Farbbildern mittels einer Elektronenstrahlröhre wird häufig ein Leuchtschirm mit drei Leuchtstoffen verwendet, die bei Erregung durch Elektronen blaues, grünes bzw. rotes Licht emittieren. Um ein helles Bild zu erzielen, ist es notwendig, daß die Leuchtstoffe einen hohen Wirkungsgrad haben. Für die blauen und grünen Bestandteile des Schirmes kann man aus einer großen Zahl von Stoffen wählen, die dieser Bedingung entsprechen. Für den roten Bestandteil ist die Wahl besonders beschränkt. Einer der am meisten verwendeten Stoffe ist mit Silber aktiviertes Zink-Kadmiumsulfid; ein anderer gleichfalls oft verwendeter Stoff ist mit Mangan aktiviertes Zink-Orthophosphat.A fluorescent screen is often used for the reproduction of color images by means of a cathode ray tube with three phosphors used, which emit blue, green or red light when excited by electrons emit.
