I found the source of the stank on the old ThinkPads.. it actually came from the aging rubber rails on the caddy breaking down o.o Use isopropyl alcohol to rub the yellow stinkyness off the inside of the hdd bay.

back in september I asked if anyone knew how to get an old 'hay' smell out of a ThinkPad. I thought, for some reason, someone had left it in a barn. Having now gone through no less than 8 old ThinkPads, I can now say that this smell is not an isolated incident. Many old ThinkPads what I can only describe as a strong barn yard smell. Thankfully wiping down the internal shell with isopropyl alcohol does seem to solve.
