Young Thug spent the first portion of his career as one of the most prolific and wildly inventive songwriters in rap. The Atlanta pioneer had his momentum slowed indefinitely, however, when he was arrested as part of a massive RICO case against his record label, Young Slime Life (YSL), in 2022. Though Thugger released BUSINESS IS BUSINESS (Metro’s Version) after the initial arrest, UY SCUTI— named after the red hyper-giant star—marks the rapper’s first studio album since earning his freedom back (he remains on probation and mostly barred from his home city). The ordeal of the past few years weighs heavily on the new album, with Thug openly reflecting on the trauma of being on trial. On “Catch Me I’m Falling,” he raps, “Broke down in a cell, I heard my brother was gon’ turn/Lawyer asked me was I next, it’ll never be my turn.” Loyalty is a key tenet that courses its way through the album. It’s a theme he reckons with on the final track, “Miss My Dogs,” a song that was seemingly recorded in the wake of a recent incident in which many of Young Thug’s jailhouse calls leaked. In those conversations, he was caught speaking poorly about some dear friends and admitted to infidelity. It’s one of the most vulnerable moments of Thug’s long career, a powerful rumination on friendship, morality, and honesty.
