Don't Trust Mirrors

Don't Trust Mirrors

The opening moments of Kelly Moran’s 2025 LP, Don’t Trust Mirrors, showcase something she mostly avoided on her 2024 effort, Moves in the Field. It’s the sound of cathartic release through synthesisers, an emotional surge that was seemingly lying in wait from the moment she decided to rediscover her affinity for techno music on Don’t Trust Mirrors. Fittingly, the sparkling track, which sounds like a night sky lit up by the surge of fireflies, is titled “Echo in the Field”, a refraction of sorts to the album it follows. That concept, too, looms large on Don’t Trust Mirrors, which finds Moran forging through the world with new eyes and ears, rediscovering music as she remembers it, not as something presented to her via reflection. Whereas Moves in the Field consisted entirely of piano-based compositions, Don’t Trust Mirrors is something else entirely. “Sans Sodalis” is an experiment in noise and texture, while “Chrysalis” is a thrilling study of the piano’s percussive qualities. The album concludes with the shimmering, buzzing “Cathedral”, a glowing concoction of melodies that will float along until Moran is ready to return again.
