It seems like there is also a question of how valuable each dentry, negative or not, really is. A lookup on a local SSD is going to be a lot easier on the system if you get the policy wrong than will a bad decision on a NFS filesystem. Is there a way to track the amount of time it took to generate the dentry, and then trash the cheaper ones and keep the more expensive ones?

That seems like a useful heuristic to weight entries, if you also take into account the number of lookups.
