In my experience, when there's a choice between OpenSSL and GnuTLS codepaths in software, the latter is significantly worse maintained. IIRC GnuTLS has openssl compatibility shims of its own just to avoid getting the short end of the stick.

Version 3 of GnuTLS was largely reworked. What version did you try?

Overall, GnuTLS API seem to me to be more consistent, which presumably allows the library to grow with less constraints.

The OpenSSL compatibility layer covers only a very small subset of the API. And it has stayed unchanged for a very long time, afaict it is in we-will-drop-it-if-it-breaks-status.
