The distinctions between "what you said is fucking moronic", "you are being fucking moronic", and "you are a fucking moron" are very fine.

actually, they're not. I teach my children not to say "you're an idiot" but to say "you did something idiotic". Or not to say "you're a liar" but to say "you lied". In one case, you condemn the person as a such and forever, in the other case you point out that the person did something bad, implicitly also saying that the next time that person shouldn't do that (bad) thing.

Both statements are harsh when you're on the receiving end. Sure, one version is technically better than the other, but that's not likely to change the outcome. People will still get mad.
