Public awareness and discourse about Codes of Conduct etc. are a relatively recent thing, but does not suggest that the problem is new, just that it's finally being taken seriously.

That was my point. I find the apparent cultural shift interesting. People seem more likely now to interpret an irritable (but not personally directed) remark as an ad hominem attack when that was not the intent behind the words. Note that I am not condoning genuinely abusive behaviour here - I just don't think Linus' criticisms count as such.
