There has been much work done on the problem of dealing with difficult people, from non-violent communication, to negotiation, to working on oneself to understand what one finds difficult about them in the first place (not that some people are not intrinsically difficult, but there is usually that side too). Studying this sort of work often pays dividends in many situations.
