Oh I'd looked at it. I knew service files were a config file of some kind you had to create for every daemon you wanted to start, in place of shell scripts, and I knew that was a horrible idea and so didn't have reason to look at the exact syntax they decided to use. But, looking at that file, I see they used the Windows .ini format, which is a good config file format, and that they seem to have done an okay job creating readable and logically placed options. It was still a bad idea from the start, but at least they did an okay job implementing it. That's something at least.
I guess what I was expecting to see, given their general incompetence and aversion to Unix philosophy, was an XML monstrosity of some kind. I thought XML would have appealed strongly to Poettering, given that it's an over-engineered solution to a non-problem.
