Yes, but a regular user who wants to have an _out of the box_ audio experience. For example, usb audio, audio redirection to hdmi, power consumption savings due to how pulse is designed to minimize hardware interrupts, etc.. definitely needs an audio server (Windows and Mac also ship with one for similar reasons ..)

They are still using a sound server, and CRAS on ChromeOS also use timer-based scheduling like pulse.. (don't know about AudioFlinger)
