While systemd and containers are kool tech, Linux desktop people delude themselves if they actually think any tech can substitute itself to strong adherence to backwards compatibility (And no automated baseline snapshots are no substitute.).

Embedded and server Linux thrives, because it depends on the kernel and on middleware that doesn't change behaviour or name every six months (the evil aggressive Linus T that stomps any attempt to make progress at the expense of existing apps). Desktop Linux will remain a no-go as long as its promoters are more interested in reworking the plumbing than in stabilizing it.
