No, it's not GNOME's fault. GNOME does what is best for GNOME, in opinion of GNOME's developers.

Upset? No, you don't get upset at clowns.
There were far more productive ways to deal with the problem. For example, creating a fork of systemd with additional features like optional journald. If that fork turns out to be popular then chances are it will be merged into the mainline. It's not even that hard, systemd's codebase is clear and modular.
Instead they've chosen the most stupid way to do changes, even going on a crusade against libsystemd. I predict that the whole idea will die off in a couple of years (at most) without producing anything useful.
