Baloney. I use it regularly.

In other words they run the remote X protocol over a secure link.

How so? The applications talk the X protocol. Once they're ported to Wayland, they can no longer do remote X, whether over ssh or not. They'll only be able to have network transparency if Wayland implements it, about which the project members have clearly indicated they do not care one bit.

Not necessarily. At least Gtk+ 3 supports selection of the Gdk back-end at initialisation time, so the same binaries can speak both Wayland and X.
