In our work development environment we have a reasonably good Linux server. But by company policy our desktop machines are all Windows. Different developers choose to work in different ways, but I use a Windows X over ssh implementation to access the server. 99% is editing and building. It works, and has kept me productive for many years.

Your points are well taken, and I do use VNC at home. The issue I have with it for work use is that it gives me a full screen grab. I don't want that - I just want some windows on my screen that are attached to processes on the remote, sharing my desktop space with other, local windows, so I can have email (Outlook running on local Windows) and an editor (running on the server) and a command line (also on the server) all visible at the same time.

I would be sad to lose that ability.
