Didn't we go through this back in kernel 2.2 with the Intel Ethernet drivers? Seems to me that we had some level of duplication on the 100Mb driver that was eventually resolved.

And more recently with the nForce driver for nVidia Ethernet, and the reverse-engineered "forcedeth" driver. In that case, nVidia deprecated their own driver in favor of forcedeth.

Also we still have aic7xxx and aic7xxx_old SCSI drivers.
