Subject:  Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 1 released
Date:  Fri, 19 Mar 2010 09:32:05 -0700

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the first beta release of Ubuntu
10.04 LTS (Long-Term Support) Desktop, Server, and Netbook editions and of
Ubuntu 10.04 Server for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon's EC2.
Codenamed "Lucid Lynx", 10.04 LTS continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of
integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a
high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop and Netbook Editions continue the trend of
ever-faster boot speeds, with improved startup times and a streamlined,
smoother boot experience.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition provides even better integration of the
Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, with its install-time cloud setup.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server for UEC and EC2 brings the power and stability of
the Ubuntu Server Edition to cloud computing, whether you're using Amazon
EC2 or your own Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud.

The Ubuntu 10.04 family of variants, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu
Studio, and Mythbuntu, also reach beta status today.

Desktop features
----------------

Social from the start: We now feature built-in integration with Twitter,
identi.ca, Facebook, and other social networks with the MeMenu in the panel.

New Design: Cleaner and faster boot, new notification area, new themes, new
icons, and new wallpaper bring a dramatically updated look and feel to
Ubuntu.

Ubuntu One: Choose any folder in your home directory to sync, choose from
millions of songs for purchase in the Ubuntu One Music store.

Please see http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/lucid/beta1 for details.

Server features
---------------

Cloud computing: The Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud installer has been vastly
improved in order to support alternative installation topologies. UEC
components are now automatically discovered and registered, even with
complex topologies. Finally, UEC is now powered by Eucalyptus 1.6.2
codebase.

UEC and EC2: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS continues the tradition of official Ubuntu
Server image releases for UEC and for Amazon's EC2, giving you everything
you need for rapid deployment of Ubuntu instances in a cloud computing
environment. UEC images, and information on running Ubuntu 10.04 on EC2, are
available at:

  http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/beta1

Stability and security: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS brings many improvements over
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to keep your servers safe and secure for the next five
years, including AppArmor profiles for many key services, kernel hardening,
and an easy-to-configure firewall.

Ubuntu Netbook features
-----------------------
Ubuntu Netbook Edition is optimised to run on Intel atom based netbooks. It
includes a new consumer-friendly interface that allows users to quickly and
easily get on-line and use their favourite applications. This interface is
optimised for a retail sales environment.

It includes the same faster boot times and improved boot experience as
Ubuntu desktop.

Kubuntu features
----------------

Kubuntu 10.04 LTS will be the first LTS to feature KDE 4 Platform and
Applications. KDE 4 has come a long way since its early releases and is now
suitable for the high demands of LTS users. Being an LTS we have focused on
bug fixing and stability for this release, but we did find time to add
features such as touchpad configuration, Firefox KDE integration, Kubuntu
notification improvements, and cross-desktop systray menu standardisation.
Kubuntu features the Plasma Desktop while Kubuntu Netbook Remix comes out of
preview status with the Plasma Netbook workspace.

See https://wiki.kubuntu.org/LucidLynx/Beta1/Kubuntu for more details.

Edubuntu features
-----------------

Edubuntu in Lucid features a more complete live environment containing more
software from universe and all existing language packs as well as our usual
educational software in their current version. For Lucid the text installer
has been removed and so is LTSP for the time being. We expect to have LTSP
back on the DVD for the next beta. The DVD is then much smaller than it used
to be but will still provide a complete education environment based on
Ubuntu Lucid.

Also included on the Edubuntu DVD is a small repository containing the
required packages to transform the regular Edubuntu desktop into a LTSP
server or install the Netbook edition interface.

Mythbuntu features
------------------

Mythbuntu 10.04 introduces MythTV 0.23. This new version is significantly
faster and should feel more responsive and stable than older versions. It
also integrates better into the OS with better support for things like
ConsoleKit and Upstart.

Please see http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Release_Notes_-_0.23 for more details
about changes introduced in 0.23.

See http://mythbuntu.org/10.04/beta for information about the Mythbuntu
beta release.

On the frontpage of gnome.org, they are still talking about 2.28. Does their timemachine runs Ubuntu ?

The 10.04 beta has a beta of gnome 2.30. Gnome 2.30 will be out by the time ubuntu 10.04 is released; ubuntu deliberately syncs its releases with the gnome project releases. Both have fixed 6-month release schedules, with ubuntu following just a short time after gnome.

I've been wondering (but not enough yet to read back Shuttleworth's call to release synchronization), what if Gnome gets delayed (for whatever reason, even Ubuntu itself has been delayed at one point)?

Will 10.4 be delayed too?

I don't think that will happen; Gnome is pretty serious about its 6-month release schedule. If something isn't ready they prefer to back that change out rather than delay a release.

if I remember correctly, Ubuntu's one delay was for a LTS, where they knew they were going to support it for 3 years.

But I *guess* if gnome was delayed, then either Ubuntu would ship with a beta of Gnome, or they too would delay the release, depending on how nasty the problem was.

Yes, Ubuntu 6.06 was delayed by 2 months (was going to be 6.04). However, 8.04 was not delayed, and many think that the volume of serious issues meant it should have been.

I'm really happy that KDE 4.4 SC is in with Long Term Support. Thanks!

I might be happy about the SC/4.4 inclusion, if I knew for sure that kaddressbook had (finally) been fixed... but I don't believe for one second that it has.

Losing the ability to filter contacts by group is inexcusable, and I don't care if you've got 1,000 contacts, or only 100. The only thing worse is losing the existing group information associated with a contact, when moving from the 4.x to 4.4.x version of kaddressbook.

If Microsoft did this, we'd be hearing a monumental hue-and-cry about it. Why the deafening silence when it's KDE?

Because nobody expects kde to work anymore? Seriously, the hue and cry you
mention took place awhile ago, when the disastrous 4.0 was released and most
kde users defected en masse. Few have ventured back. Most, like me, have
found gnome or other desktop environments agreeable. I'm not convinced the
kde devs are concerned with normal users anymore.

Back in the days of kde 3.5.x, kde was the overwhelming favorite desktop, as
indicated by the various polls on the subject. In the aftermath of the 4.x
release, the popularity of kde was way down there with twm, last I checked.

Where do you have such interesting polls? Really, link please.

AFAIK KDE as whole lost maybe 10% points of its popularity during 4.0/4.1 times. And since release of 4.3 its popularity stopped decreasing.

Right, KDE/4.3 *did* fix (most of) the problems with /4.0; however, /4.4 then proceeded to *break* things, once again. What's up with this?

It reminds me of the joke "How many psychiatrists does it take to change a lightbulb?" "None, but the bulb has to *really want* to change!"

KDE/4.4 works, but you have to *really want* to use it, if you're going to move from /4.3 :-)

It shouldn't be this way.

ATi 3D drivers?

Thinking of updating tonight just to *finally* get 3D working on my 3200HD. Sounds like the support should be in there - anyone confirm?

Any showstopping bugs updating from Karmic?

So far for me, upgrading has been pretty painful. I did it manually, though, so non-manual might work better (not sure how it works, tho) :)

Wow, are people _still_ doing that? You're really not supposed to do that, they don't support it and they don't test it.
Google "ubuntu upgrade"
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading
From that page for example:
"Network Upgrade for Ubuntu Servers:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade"

Good question. I've never found that documented - it just seems to be some kind of secret voodoo that you have to run, cargo cult style. Try unpacking the updating program and you will find a dizzying array of complex and undocumented scripts.

Unlike a simple aptitude dist-upgrade, unfortunately, the Ubuntu auto-updater is brittle and obnoxious. I *have* found on a server though that it seems to be skippable without ill effects; clearly they haven't completely managed to butcher all of Debian's good work yet.

APT and the art of high-quality slaughtery

Posted Mar 23, 2010 5:02 UTC (Tue) by sladen (guest, #27402) [Link] (2 responses)

The "they" are the primary authors/maintainers of APT; compare the names in: Update-manager/do-release-upgrade exist to take care of higher-level upgrade concerns, such as changing the distribution name in /etc/apt/sources.list and coping with fundamental migrations like moving from IDE to SCSI/UUID device naming, Nvidia madness and boot-loader migrations. If you're comfortable undertaking those types of tasks yourself, you are free not to use it... Have a look at the following file and the signed tarballs of cleartext scripts referenced within in it for what type global workarounds are undertaken: If you have encountered situations where you believe that the upgrade code has become unstable (or "brittle") then I'm sure that bug reports would be welcomed; the relevant place to report these appears to be:

>Update-manager/do-release-upgrade exist to take care of higher-level upgrade concerns, such as changing the distribution name in /etc/apt/sources.list and coping with fundamental migrations like moving from IDE to SCSI/UUID device naming, Nvidia madness and boot-loader migrations.

These things should be documented somewhere *per release*, so that it's possible to know what this package is doing, and perform the upgrade manually.

>If you're comfortable undertaking those types of tasks yourself, you are free not to use it.

But this is a trap - as soon as you go there you must abandon all hope of any kind of support.

>Have a look at the following file and the signed tarballs of cleartext scripts referenced within in it for what type global workarounds are undertaken:

You are joking?
Picking the Lucid version, 'find . -path ./mo -prune -o -type f | wc -l' gives 224. That's 224 files to check, after excluding all the translations. On the plus side it does appear to be more comprehensible than the last version I tried to figure out (that was quite some time ago).

>If you have encountered situations where you believe that the upgrade code has become unstable (or "brittle") then I'm sure that bug reports would be welcomed;

Well I had a quick look at the bug list there to see if I could remember what it was that so incensed me about update-manager in my last frustrating attempt to use it. Though several of them are relevant, I believe the real culprit was #222732 - if at some point in the upgrade, update-manager is unable to download a file, it deletes everything it's downloaded so far and resets everything, without so much as a retry. Since this is almost guaranteed to happen, does that not seem like brittle behaviour to you?

(And note that that bug report is almost two years old. This package receives frequent updates and yet in effect may as well be unmaintained, because show-stopping problems are ignored. That practically *defines* Ubuntu in my experience.)
