Instead of inventing something completely different, could some existing framework like Opensolaris / Solaris 10's RBAC (http://www.softpanorama.org/Solaris/Security/solaris_rbac...) be used?

It'd have the advantage of already being in production several years, having a open source reference implementation in Opensolaris (although it'd have to be reimplemented due to license incompatibility) already having an LDAP schema for central administration, and already having a set of people knowledgeable about it.

We have had grsecurity for years. Quite popular, but developed outside of the kernel.

Lets not forget PolicyKit is part of Freedesktop.org. It is somewhat similar Solaris RBAC in term of concept.

Is anyone using RBAC in Solaris? Just because it is "in production" doesn't mean that it is any good.
