For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in version 3.5-1sarge2. We recommend that you upgrade your crip package. Upgrade Instructions - -------------------- wget url will fetch the file for you dpkg -i file.deb will install the referenced file. If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for sources.list as given below: apt-get update will update the internal database apt-get upgrade will install corrected packages You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the footer to the proper configuration. Debian security update to crip

Posted Jul 1, 2005 0:01 UTC (Fri) by JoeBuck (guest, #2330) [Link] (4 responses)

An odd choice for the first sarge security fix; I hope that fixes for a number of more serious hazards will come out soon. But the notice refers to 11 separate .deb files for the 11 architectures; that has got to add some delay. How quickly is Debian going to be able to roll out a security fix if a major, actively exploited hole is found? Will Debian hold back fixes from x86 to wait for m68k? That's probably just fine for crip, but could be deadly for a remotely exploitable bug other distros have fixed.

LWN has a "today's security updates" page every day, and this is the first entry for Debian in 27 days, even though Debian has more packages than everyone else. Does the sheer massive size of Debian, together with the 11 architectures, raise security concerns?

In the past, security releases have not waited on a per-arch basis, and have been somewhat timely. Let us hope this track record returns.

My guess...

...is that they're (re?-)fine-toothing stuff new since Woody. This may make other security updates slower for a while but may also head off a few showstoppers in new-to-Sarge packages.

I believe there were some technical problems with the security release procedure. It seems to be sorted now (sudo and spamassassin fixes have just turned up).

Update for cvs, gzip, sudo and spamassassin have just been released.

Notice that woody also included 11 architectures, and record show that
Debian security was able to roll updates quite quickly nevertheless.

The release of sarge has caused some trouble with security.Debian.org
scripts which are now fixed.
