I do genuinely feel bad for not enjoying Tangerine because the groundbreaking leads are great, the soundtrack is tremendous, and it's got an energy and enthusiasm about it that is probably where I gained any enjoyment I got from this film. There are also a couple of genuinely beautiful moments here that are wonderfully well handled by director Sean Baker.
Ultimately though, it's a whole of talking and shouting to no particularly interesting end. The dialogue wasn't nearly as sharp and funny as I would personally want from a film as reliant on dialogue as Tangerine is, while the much talked about finale at a doughnut shop is chaotic for sure, but reliant on an extremely obvious revelation that is a cliché that even this film cannot avoid it seems. The performances from the support cast are also very mixed indeed.
There is a much bigger picture here that far outweighs whatever entertainment value I didn't get from it though, and my boredom is far from being the most important thing here. It's experimental filmmaking where a lot of what is being experimented (not the iPhone gimmick, which I really hope does NOT catch on) is really very important indeed. My appreciation and admiration of Tangerine far outweighs its failure to have me on the edge of my seat, which is why I don't feel it would be appropriate to rate it. Simply put, we need more films like this.
