Removed Comment > You just have no clue about the example you picked, so it’s picked apart easy by people who are experience in that field. Yes, I had *no clue* that excavators have overhead and are expensive pieces of machinery to operate. You got me. I was *totally unaware* that there's not a singular dollar per hour amount that a hole digger (official job title) charges regardless of equipment and time. The fact that events wouldn't have played out like the stupid toy example I made up in five seconds in the real world is honestly blowing my fucking mind. I bow before your knowledge of ways to be an obnoxious pedant who overlooks the point of the example for the sake of an "um, ackshually". Thank you for setting me straight. You know, I was wondering if maybe I should say something like "I was going to dig a hole with a shovel, but I hurt my back, so it'll take me longer" (still simplified, of course) specifically to cut down on pedantry risk, but then I decided to have just a modicum of faith that people wouldn't be as deliberately as obtuse as you are. by TheTechnician27

Removed Comment Nah, just calling bullshit out where I see it. And you just happen to be doing this fucking everywhere. Oh no, some loser on the Internet thinks I'm a Zionist. Time to kill myself! Edit: it's also funny that you're accusing me of ad hominems when all I asked was for you to explain specifically what the Iron Dome was after you claimed defensive weapons don't exist. Instead of doing that, you went directly to ad hominems by calling me a Zionist and refusing to answer. by prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone

Removed Comment Well, I don't deny that Gaza and the West Bank are annexed and under apartheid. You've accused me of being a liberal Zionist. I've not personally seen or heard a large contingent arguing otherwise. I'm sure you can find people who would argue otherwise, but you can find people who would argue the world is flat. Determining what percentage of people believe that position seems hard, but purely anecdotally I don't think it's many. I did stop and research Egypt/Jordan stuff. That's a factoid I'd heard but not verified. The Egypt thing seems to depend on the definition of "offered" for sure, and how much you believe reporting on the nitty gritty of the negotiations during the Camp David Accords in the 70s. The Jordan/West Bank situation was just messy, and while I can see why someone would say Jordan rejected ownership of the West Bank, it's definitely misrepresentative. So I'll rescind both points. Further research doesn't adequately support the stance. I meant "unclaimed" in the sense of not having a legitimized government. I realize this descends into a debate about the legitimacy of Hamas or the PLO, and to what degree those were successfully operating as a cohesive state, and to what degree it was their fault if they weren't. I'll address this more in a later point. (Combining two points) I never disagreed about it being an apartheid state, and I stand by nobody reasonable disagreeing with that. (Combining two points) We can definitely both just assert things about whether removing the settlers is necessary. I don't think it's a point that can be easily "proven." My gut is that, without the protections of the Israeli government, the settler issue could be reasonably dealt with. And not to put too fine a point on it, but your last point just sounds like a Zionist talking point flipped around. How do you expect a state to exist when it has thousands of armed militants operating within its borders? It's not an easy problem for anybody, which is why it hasn't been solved anytime in the past century. The way I see it, you have three options. Externally enforced segregation (two state solution), externally enforced secularization (one state solution with equal rights guaranteed to Palestinians), or elimination of one side or the other. It's worth noting that neither of the first two options can work at all with the only two players at the table being Israel and Palestine. There is no path forward where an agreement holds without a heavily involved arbiter who's willing to enforce the agreement. Which is a tough sell, but I think preferable to one side eliminating the other. Especially since, without major intervention from a third party anyway, it seems like the side that is most likely to get eliminated is the Palestinian one. by testfactor

Removed Comment I don't think anyone, even the staunchest Zionist apologist, denies that Gaza and the West Bank are functionally annexed. They might argue that it was an unavoidable inevitably after Egypt and Jordan refused to claim those territories when they were offered. Unclaimed and unmoderated zones in the Middle East tend to quickly become hard to ignore. Thaf said, and to be perfectly clear, I'm not saying that they had to form an apartheid state. They're obviously in the wrong about the way they've gone about things. No reasonable person questions that. I don't think that I agree a two state solution would require forced relocation of settlers though, in the same way that it wouldn't require Israel to expell all Palestinians from Israel. Minority populations should still be allowed to exist. There's obviously the secondary question about whatever land that the settlers had settled in within any territory in the proposed, newly formed Palestinian state. To that I would say, that's up to the new Palestinian government. So long as no human rights are violated, they are free to handle the governance of land ownership however they see fit. by testfactor

Removed Comment I did read the ones I didn't respond to and decided that I didn't really have the spoons to get into a long drawn out debate, so I just figured we could agree to disagree and move on. But, if you insist, the problem with both is that they paint a false dichotomy. The idea that you must support the complete removal of the state of Israel from the map or you love Palestinian genocide is nonsense. It's no more reasonable than saying that if you support the state of Germany continuing to exist it must mean you're a Nazi. One can disagree vehemently with what a country is doing without demanding the country be dissolved. And the complicated history of Israel isn't lost on me. I recognize the problems inherit in its founding. But I recognize the problems in how a lot of nations were founded. That isn't, in and of itself, a reason to dissolve a nation either. I think that there is a viable path to a two state solution given sufficient third party intervention. I think that more bloodshed is, while sometimes necessary, not the answer to the current conflict from either side. And I think that there are no good guys in any of this. by testfactor

Removed Comment Dude most Americans didn't believe that the Holocaust was happening until the first camps were being liberated by GI's. Reports were made to FDR about what was going on, a few snippets came out here and there but it was not widely publicized and not believed by those who heard it usually. The scale of death and human atrocity seemed unreal mixed with the world war 1 anti German propaganda which proved mostly wrong that when the truth was widely made clear they made sure to film it and document it so that nobody could deny it. Just because you don't like the administration and they are looking for any reason to distract from the Epstein files doesn't mean that the Iranian government isn't doing what totalitarian, or small coalition governments, do everywhere, which is to supress their restive population at escalating degrees until either the protests stop or a civil war starts. by Pman@lemmy.org

Removed Comment I remember that. Shortly before the election, everyone started Caring about palestinian lives again, even though nobody had paid attention for years. Then the dems had a ton of backlash for not stopping Israel, which turned a lot of people against her. Then Donald Trump won and gave netanyahu free reign to do as he please. I hate that the choice is between corrupt and evil, but i do wonder if palestinians wouldn't have had it better right now if Donald Trump hadn't won again... Edit: I am not saying that there were not a lot of legitimate reasons to not want to vote for another centrist, but using Palestine as an excuse is poor taste if you ask me, especially seeing how fucked they are now. by BogeyTheSwear@lemmy.zip
