| 14 days ago | mod | Removed Comment If point 1 is correct why have so many former Soviet satellite nations joined NATO, via popular support, or tried in the cases of Georgia and Ukraine, while Armenia is leaving the Russian defensive pact they have been a part of for decades? It seems like they would join with Russia or Belarus to recreate the Soviet Union, and would vote for more Soviet style policies instead of the largely capitalist policies of places ranging from the Balkans to the Baltics.
For point 2 you do not know either their economics or history if you think it was not an extractive empire, from taking all German machinery they could out of Germany at the end of WW2 to having the more economically productive zones not being part of russia but being in places like Czechoslovakia, Poland, East Germany, and the other european states, and having the products then sent to Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
For point 3 having guaranteed housing is great and all no real problem with that except for where the housing would be guaranteed, such as being guaranteed to live in the Arctic circle in a gulag or one of their many cities in that area that are extremely polluted.
For point 4, if having democratic and republic in the name of a country makes it so then I have a bridge to sell you and ocean front property to sell you in Arizona. You can also have elections to do 2 things, the Soviet union chose who could present themselves for elections and during the Polish I dependence from the USSR they voted for none of the above and not for who they wanted as they didn't have anyone they wanted. Think the Democratic party sabotaging the Bernie Sanders campaign in favor of the establishment candidates.
For point 5 the CCP having good propagandist studies doesn't surprise me in the slightest but having majors that would challenge the current ruling establishment with new ways of thinking will never be allowed to the masses in a long autocracy which the CCP under Xi very much is. Your point more affirms my point then refutes it.
For point 6 in the Soviet union and in the CCP both cou tries had projects that were based on stolen technology and not so much from their own original tech, think the nuclear bomb and sidewinder missiles in the USSR from the US and their missile program from their own version of operation paperclip kidnapping German scientists after ww2 and the fact that the CCP forces all cou tries and companies who set up manufacturing in china to do a technology transfer and soon there after having a Chinese company producing the same product more or less at a massive discount, as well as stolen tech for things such as the F-35 ending up in their production of their stealth technology for their own 5thing generation fighter, or all the Soviet era tech they have then improved upon for their own systems.
For point 7 central planning it led to such things as the Holodomor and the great leap forward which both led to the starvation deaths of millions and is either intentional to kill of dissidents or is an accidental happenstance from poor planning meaning that central planning would not be great in the planning for how to transport and deliver food, and there really isn't a 3rd option. There is also the fact that central planning can be efficient for mass scale things in the short to medium term but will stagnate development or newer products, let's say for example how the microwave oven was invented by a radar operator in WW2 on the american side because the operator had his chocolate melt in his pocket really quickly, in the Soviet union you wouldn't have microwave emmiters given you engineers with a plan of making a home apliance and so no microwave oven, and this goes for thousands of products. | 15 days ago | mod | Removed Comment I am living in post Soviet times, but if you mean in a totalitarian regime in Russia pre USSR, during USSR, or post USSR they all sucked, be it Trotsky's terrible decisions which, had he been appointed as the head of state after Lenin's death would most likely have led the Soviet Union to war against western europe, including Nazi germany, years ahead of time and united them all against the Soviet union, to Stalin destroying crop yields due to bureaucratic inefficiencies to be charitable or a genocide similar to what happened in Ireland or India in the 1800's due to profit extraction and to quell popular uprisings. And those are just pre WW2 events, that doesn't condone any of Tzar Nicholas 2nd's terrible decision making but the Soviet union was doing at the end of the unions existence what the US government is doing now, allowing for seniority to rule leaving a less vibrant and more entrenched political elite who doesn't need to deliver anything to the people to keep their power.
If you want communism to work you can but only on small scales like Kibbutzs or Co-ops where the workers actually own and control the means of production in a meaningful manner, but the Soviet Union, or any other communist government by name has people who don't know the intricacies of how a certain field works dictating not only regulations but quotas which are only truly fulfilled on paper. Also I find it rich that people who support anti colonialism and think America or Israel have done some bad ethnic cleansing, to put it mildly in America's case, ignore the continual Russification of all places Russia can, be it in Romania, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Hungary, or even within its borders in areas which had a large non Russian population more similar in culture to Mongolians; they did it during the time of Ivan the Terrible, Katherine the Great, when they took Saint Petersburg from the Sweeds to have a Baltic port, under all the Tzars, but not just them under Lenin and Stalin Russian became the de facto language of all nations part of the Warsaw pact and they suppressed other languages, that's why Crimea doesn't have the Tartars anymore for example.
