Some mods see their community as their personal army and echo chamber and manipulate the emotions of their group to achieve some kind of self-affirming posts. That's toxic as hell. I've been banned for posting about things that are legal in my country and attacking things that are illegal. People (including mods) have the right to read something and be offended by it - that doesn't make it offensive per se. AFAIC, Lemmy can suck my balls. I'm becoming disenchanted by it daily. It has replaced "commie" or "pinko" or other such terms in the modern age. It is, in effect, the right wing equivalent of the left calling any opinion they disagree with "fascist". 1 年前	mod	Restored Comment There's two reasons for this: 1. People are bad at discussion because we're not taught proper rhetoric any longer. The human brain is a fantastic pattern matcher, but logic, reasoned debate, etc. are patterns it has to learn to be able to replicate. Of course there's a reason we're not taught this. Teachers would have to tolerate children calling them on their bullshit and teachers tend to be control freaks who can't stand children "talking back". As would bosses, politicians, et al. It is not in the interests of those in power to have a populace that understands rhetoric and debate. 2. Years of people arguing in bad faith makes loads of people (myself included) assume that someone who "just wants debate" is in reality a troll looking for trouble. 1 年前	mod	Restored Comment I've also noted that "yes it is, no it isn't" research papers and have even gone down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out who funded the papers and if there was a pattern on each side. (Protip: I haven't found one. It's really weird.) I think the problem is that we genuinely don't know shit about the human brain except in isolated pieces and unfortunately there are things which exist which cannot be understood in a reductionist way: you understand the whole or you understand nothing. The brain is such a weird organ (which may even have quantum components!) that interacts in so many unexpected ways within itself that I think it will be a long time before we can say anything definitive about it. As to what changed my mind: 1. The books Brainsex and How Brains Think together started waking me up to just how complicated and weird the brain is. The former also very specifically showed a model of how homosexuality develops and when combined with a few research papers also explained to me gender dysphoria. 2. I also came to realize that it doesn't fucking impact me in the slightest if someone who is "male" feels uncomfortable in that designation and wants to be treated as female. I've always been of the opinion "your body, your choice" even as I took the choice to not use any drug harder than alcohol (and even there I hate drunkenness).
