Description
"Two investigators specializing in supernatural crimes are tasked with the search for a series of disappearances in a rural area of Japan, including a girl who vanished during a summer festival. With aid from benevolent local Yokai (spiritual entities from Japanese folklore), the pair face off with malicious spirits and entities as they uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearances."
This is a primarily orchestral soundtrack for a mystery/action game featuring a few Japanese instruments (and their imitations) to reflect the setting.
1 - Title
Pretty self explanatory... I imagine this track as the music that plays when you've just booted up the game. The first half of the track is a loosely timed solo section featuring a koto accompanying a cello solo playing the theme of human spirits/souls (or in other words, the dead). The second half has a taiko passively keeping the rhythm in the background as an alto flute and hichiriki (reed instrument) plays the melody of the mystery theme (that also kind of serves as the theme for the living, I guess). I substituted a duduk for the hichiriki because there aren't any good samples :(

2 - Battling the Oni
The pair faces off with the main culprit! Turns out an oni (demon) had claimed a part of the mountains neighboring the village as its own territory, kidnapping and devouring unsuspecting people wandering within its boundaries.
This track is all about fighting a giant demon, hence the super-aggressive nature of it. Lots of taiko. I play a sopranino recorder solo in this one, imitating a traditional japanese flute.

3 - Release of the Spirits
After defeating the oni, the spirits of the devoured are released, free from the demon's torment. The girl that disappeared from the summer festival is found frightened but alive. She explains that she was reminded of a recently deceased family member that would accompany her to the summer festival every year, and wanted to visit their grave in the mountains but was then kidnapped by the oni.
This track is sort of a recap of the title track, but this time starting off with the mystery theme.. 2 shos, furin bells and a cluster of soprano/alto/tenor recorders create a pad, representing the freed spirits fluttering around. This eventually develops to a fully harmonized version of the spirits theme (more recorder playing yay) before ending with the cello solo heard at the beginning again.

Message from the artist
Hope you enjoy this one. This was a challenge!!! The first half of the jam was just researching what scales and instruments to use. The second half of the jam was realizing I had waaaaaaaay overestimated how much I could write in the given amount of time. I was also challenging myself to NOT include a cello solo for this jam, but as you can hear from the very first track, I failed that one. Lol.
Cover artist is done by Asahi Yonaha! This cover art is not the full version. I think I'll use the completed version for a separate release of the soundtrack with a bunch of other tracks I couldn't finish in time.

Theme

One Summer Night
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
It mostly fits with the text theme, as this fake game takes place in a single night during a summer festival. I saw the picture theme as a photograph of the missing girl in question handed to the investigators, but that's about it.

Title - Beautiful viola melody, I like the gliss. Instrumentation works really well together. I can imagine instruments in an orchestra playing the ambient noises too, is that how you wrote it? It's very well made and epic, worried that something this long won't be fully appreciated as a title track though.

Battling the Oni - Love the low brass, used super well. Very strong melodies. So great to hear some real percussion used as it should! All of your build ups are so fantastic! These instruments sound so good, I'm assuming you payed for high quality ones? (if not please share your secrets)

Release the spirits - Little touches like the trills on the flutes don't go unnoticed, it really adds to the orchestration in subtle ways and makes the whole thing sound so incredible. Great return of the viola, I assume echoing the title.

You clearly put alot of work into these tracks, I would love to hear a whole soundtrack from you!

Beautiful! I love the title and release of spirits theme especially. This also tells a great story in a short amount of tracks which is commendable.

What a beautiful set of songs ! The instruments along the orchestration (and that flute !) gives it a unique sound which transports us into this universe. The quality is top notch, amazing !

Also I loved how you melted the first theme in that last track, gorgeous !

Title: The koto immediately sets the scene. I love the space and light percussion you use in this track, giving the sense of a tranquil yet mysterious setting. I also really appreciate your commitment to the instrumentation of the traditional style. I certainly empathize with the frustration with finding a good sample of the instrument you are looking for! This is a phenomenal title theme! It eases us into the world of the game, sets the scene, gives us very clear and beautifully orchestrated melody motifs, and tells a story in itself within 3 minutes. Beautiful!

Battling the Oni: Your recording is 1) spectacular, and 2) sounds so much like a traditional Japanese flute. I am in awe of how you are able to manipulate the orchestra to create the exact sound and movement that you want. I am going to save these tracks and learn what I can from them. Another wonderful piece!

Release of the Spirits: Wow. I can’t really say much more. This is so professional sounding. It feels like you took it straight out of a game or movie. I loved all of it and especially how the themes returned and concluded the story.

Overall: What a fantastic story and musical journey. It was transportive, emotional, and professional. I will be studying your music to hopefully absorb some of your excellence! I really hope you decide to share if you do end up releasing this as a larger work. Excellent work and thank you for sharing!

majestic, rich, and impactful. really beautiful call and response found throughout this whole thing. i think your battle theme is really well executed, and is grandiose in a way that i haven't heard elsewhere in the jam so far. awesome work. thanks for sharing :)

So beautiful! Love each composition, and this has definitely inspired me to study and compose in this style :)

In your description, you say you tried to avoid writing a cello solo. Why is that? I don't mind of course! Self imposed limitations can help make things super creative and I have done similar things in past jams. I was just curious if there was a deeper reason.

The third track, the way it starts I instantly thought of Ace Attorney trials and tribulations. The scenes with the magatama and a dark background as a similar ominous noise is played.

The vibes are perfect for the setting. Very rich sounds and great atmosphere in each piece.

素晴らしい音楽です、感動しました! Absolutely loved the entirety of it, from your masterful use of Japanese scales, the overall epic yet somber atmosphere, to the little details and flourishes interspersed so well everywhere to keep the music flowing and engaging to listen to. Circling back to the title theme in the ending is also such a nice touch. If you ever get around to it, I'd love to hear the rest of the music you had planned. Congrats on a fantastic submission, and thanks for sharing!

Fantastic submission! The whole soundtrack was incredibly beautiful, especially in Release of the Spirits around the 2 minute mark. Great work :)

Thanks for the dream

Absolutely beautiful, the Japanese vibes and the orchestration is on point!!

Battling the Oni is pretty awesome. First 30 seconds instantly reminded me of Wind Waker miniboss music.
Excellent soundtrack. Very well made and enjoyable.

Outstanding work! I love all the instrument choices. I can perfectly picture the game.

Wow, absolutely beautiful sounds!! I love the way this all comes together. If I could say anything, I feel like a little more percussion could elevate your songs a bit, but that's far from necessary. This is right up my alley. If you haven't heard music from Xenoblade before, I would recommend giving some of their tracks a listen, specifically their night themes. Agnus Colony (Night) is incredibly in line with what you've done. Great job, what a surprise!

This is awesome, its giving me anime battle!! Nice use of the instruments

Loving this battle theme, it sounds very jRPG-esque! For the soundtrack as a whole:  the traditional Japanese instruments work beautifully with the orchestra, and the whole thing sounds very polished. It's also just... good music. A+, nice work!

what an awesome build up for the battle fight ! the ambience is heartfelt in track three. loved this

This is a fantastic submission, very original too!

I like how you blend the iconic timbres of the genres. The muted trumpet paired with the koto and shakuhachi combination creates this mysterious, somewhat dangerous, noir mood with a twist of traditional Japanese aesthetic. I like the sho and the shimmering harmonies at the opening of Release go the Spirits. It has this regal gagaku image that smoothly transitions into the main theme.

Super! I love the melodies and the quality is just phenomenal.
