Creative Vision / Rationale / How Did You Incorporate the Theme
The jam image inspired in me the feeling of not being alone, and the struggle of reaching out when you need help.

When we feel alone, sometimes one controller is all it takes to connect us.

Some of my most recent favorite memories are enjoying single player games on the couch with friends, passing the controller around, experiencing it together.

These moments have become rarer with online multiplayer, so I built a single-player game meant to be played together with friends in the same room, passing around the controller. The game is fully playable by yourself, but best experienced with friends.

Each character in Happy LANd is based on a real friend of mine, and I'm planning on having them play this just as designed. This TGC Game Jam has helped me create a heartwarming moment right in the middle of the holidays.

BEST WITH FRIENDS! Experiencing this game for the first time at a LAN with a few close friends was uniquely special. I knew Vofgofm was spending every spare minute in their busy life pouring their soul into this project, but I had no idea it was this polished and included all of our friends before I played it a few days ago. I was blown away with the soulfulness of this game, with its hand drawn animations and a million references to each friend. Passing the controller was a wholesome and connected experience. Happy LANd is what gaming is all about, at least in my book. I loved how each character has their own movement and unique obstacles in the game. I am definitely biased but my favorite part was the alien station with all the little guys from my tiny museum. The alien character's float mechanic was really fun too. I loved the endless references to all our favorite single player games we pass the controller on together.

The theme's image (symbolic of the creation of Adam)  spoke to me, and although I did not submit a game, I loved playing each submission I could. So many takes of one image, one feeling. To me, the image is about human connection, reaching out, and how we can sometimes never touch or truly be close. When we all finished Happy LANd together I felt more connected to myself and my friends than ever before. The most beautiful and fitting part is when we all finished our characters part, the final boss came and it was VERY difficult (but there is a full playthrough if you get stuck!). Vofgofm helped us beat that final boss and we watched in awe as the boss just kept coming at us with new stuff! With each players powers combined in an intuitive and seamless way, we all watched the color come back to our life. The two hands reaching out for each other, now connected.

I am immensely proud of the Dev, my dear friend Vofgofm. Thank you for making this game and showing me what true connection is.

What a game! I love not only the artworks but also gimmicks and the way you interpreted the theme. I also have some memories like you, so I could fully understand what you said.

We love so much the narrative in the game and the game design as platformer, is so good!!, eventually we were hooked with how easy was to move forward, and also really appreciate the checkpoints hehe.

Congratulations 🫶

By far the most smooth and well-designed platformer I have played. Great movement and boss design. I also love the hand-drawn style and the little animation! So fun to play!

Developer

Thank you for playing! I'm glad you appreciated the art! I'm a programmer first and this was my first big foray into doing all my own art, hence the very simple style :)

Lovely game. Although I have to play the game by myself alone but it is still fun. Art, music and character design are excellent! But I actually got stuck here after beating the monster. I am not sure if it is a bug orI need to do something to escape. But anyway it is quite a great game for me!

Developer

After beating the monster here, you should get a short cutscene with the dog and progress by moving over the snow mound to the right :) Thanks so much for giving it a play!

This is so cool!! I didn't finished yet (I will soon because the game is great!). I really enjoyed all the game mechanics, expecially the grapple one.
My only feedback is: This game could evolve in something amazing!

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words!!

That’s quite an effort for a relatively short jam! I really appreciate the local multiplayer choice—I’ve made a number of LM games myself in the past. The game is filled with genuine emotion, too, and the name is clever!

Thanks so much for giving it a play! I worked tirelessly over the period of the Jam to get the whole project done, never would have finished if it didn't line up with the US holidays giving me extra free time 😊
