Color theory, in visual art, is the foundational concept of the color wheel, including primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors and more.

Tints and shades. Tints are created by adding white to lighten hues. Shades are created by adding black or contrasting colour to darken hues. Tints and shades illustration by Zena O’Connor.

All colours exhibit a tonal value - that is, a lightness or darkness. Colour may be high key tonal value, intermediate key or low key tonal value. Colour Fundamentals Tonal value illustration by Zena O’Connor, PhD.

Warm Colours and Cool Colours. Warm colours share hue similarity with imagery depicting warmth, warm climates, fire and heat. Cool colours share hue similarity with imagery depicting cool climates, coolness, ice and cold. Warm and Cool Colours do not reflect the temperature of hues. According to the Kelvin Scale, coloured wavelengths at the blue end of the spectrum are hotter.
