Stater of Phaselis. AR, 10.93 g, 29 mm, 12 h, archon Socratides, Lycia, 276-168 BC. Laureate head of Apollo r. with long tresses to base of neck. Border of dots. / Athena with thunderbolt in raised r. hand, aegis on l. arm, stands r. on the forepart of a galley facing to r. Said to be from a small hoard; by 1959: with Hesperia Art, 2219 St. James Place, Philadelphia 3, Pa.; Feb. 11, 1960: purch. by MFA from Hesperia Art for $2.200, accession no. 60.40. T. Wilbour Fund in memory of Z. Wilbour.

A Philip II stater posthumously issued from the Magnesia mint, circa 323-319 BC. An exceptional example of Greek numismatic art. The obverse with an exquisite head of Apollo, a laurel wreath running through his unruly curls of hair. The reverse shows Philip II in a two-horse chariot, the horses rearing and braying as Philip grips the reins in his left hand and raises his crop with his right. The inscription below reads: ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ "Of Philip".
