Cú Chulainn, which translates to ‘Cullan’s Hound’ or ‘the Hound of Cullan’ was Ireland’s greatest warrior in Irish mythology and legend. His herioc last stand against his enemies has since been used as nationalist symbol in Ireland to commemorate those who gave their lives for their country.
3. 'Cuculain... in death's pangs' by Patrick Tuohy (1919). It shows the hero strapped to a standing stone close to a lake-edge. An otter emerges from rushes close to his feet while two ravens take flight above his head. The depiction is based on the later version of the death-tale of Cúchulainn in which the hero kills an otter (dobharchú) for drinking his blood. First published in The Triumph and Passing of Cuculain by Standish O'Grady (1919). The region is known as An Breisleach Mór, "The Great Carnage", while the field in which this stone stands is called the Field of Slaughter. In the 1920s a bronze spearhead was found in the field, perhaps showing it to be a genuine ancient battle-site. Sites like this begs the question is there more truth to these stories than meets the eye.

‘The Stone of the Big Man’. This is believed to be the very stone spoken of in the legend of Cú Chulainn’s death. It is found in County Louth, known in Irish as Lú, named so after Cú Chulainn’s father Lugh, the Celtic god of the mysterious Tuatha Dé Danann.
