Human Performance Collaborative is a strategic initiative out of Ohio State's Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge.

HPC connects assets (ex. knowledge and skills, capital, social, political, and physical) and focused on understanding the integration and interaction between and among the eight factors (Sleep and Relaxation, Social Life, Emotional Wellness, Cognition, Mental Fitness, Physical Wellness, Food and Nutrition, and Physical Exercise) on individual or team overall performance by assessing current state, analyzing the current state relative to performance, and augmenting performance to optimize effectiveness.

Areas of Research Focus

Person performing a barbell squat while wearing monitoring sensors, with a researcher observing in a lab setting.

Peak Performance Under Pressure

Understanding how stress, cognitive demand, and cumulative load shape human performance. Identifying evidence-based strategies to optimize readiness, build resilience, and sustain performance at the edge of human capability.
Space HP

Human Performance in Space

Exploring how humans adapt to spaceflight environments—physiologically, psychologically, and behaviorally. Developing evidence-based countermeasures to protect astronaut health and optimize mission performance.
recovery science room

Recovery Science

Understanding the mechanisms that drive restoration and adaptation following physical and cognitive demand. Advancing evidence-based recovery strategies to accelerate return to readiness across populations.
Women's Health

Women’s Health & Performance

Advancing research on physiological and biomechanical factors that influence women’s performance. Optimizing injury prevention, training, nutrition, and recovery across life stages—from menstrual cycles to menopause.

From Elite to Everyday

Translating performance principles, interventions, and technologies developed in elite athletic, military, and space environments into scalable solutions. Improving health, function, and quality of life across general and clinical populations.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Performance

Harnessing AI and advanced analytics to integrate multimodal human performance data into actionable insights. Enabling personalized training, recovery, and performance optimization across diverse populations.

Join the Collaborative

Under the direction of Faculty Director Josh Hagen, the Human Performance Collaborative provides the framework and resources required to build and deploy interdisciplinary teams of investigators to advance the science of human performance. University students, faculty and staff interested in Human Performance Research are invited to join the collaborative.
