Dr. Dangerous: Secrets of the Temple of Xol'Tan

--- Free Version ---

In 2024, deep within the Amazon jungle lies the ancient Temple of Xol'Tan, a place largely ignored by the modern world. Dr. Victor Dangerous, an innovative scientist and adventurer, has recently established a secret research station within the ruins of the temple. He is determined to explore the mysterious energies of the temple and study the unusual creatures that inhabit it.

One evening, as a fierce storm batters the jungle, lightning strikes the main power supply of the station. The station’s electronics fail, and the temple's automatic security protocols are activated. Doors lock shut, and Dr. Dangerous is violently thrown into a deep tunnel beneath the temple.

As Dr. Dangerous recovers from the fall, he finds himself in a shimmering tunnel, illuminated by glowing crystals and mysterious energies. However, the initial wonder is quickly overshadowed by a serious threat. Surrounding him are aggressive creatures that have emerged from the temple's energy. These creatures seem determined to prevent him from exploring the temple and fulfilling his mission.

Dr. Dangerous’ equipment is damaged, and his weapon only functions intermittently. He must confront the attacking creatures, which, with their surprisingly intelligent and coordinated attacks, make survival difficult. Some creatures attack him directly, while others use the environment to trap or overwhelm him.

With his equipment limited and under constant threat, Dr. Dangerous needs to be resourceful. His goal is to find batteries scattered deep within the tunnel, which are essential for restoring his station’s systems. These batteries must be inserted into the station’s computers to deactivate the security protocols and regain control.

As Dr. Dangerous navigates the temple, he learns more about the connection between the creatures and the temple’s energy source. The creatures are not merely obstacles but keys to the temple's secrets. Their aggressive nature is a result of the unstable energy the temple emits, and Dr. Dangerous realizes that controlling this energy is crucial.

With each battery found and each computer repaired, Dr. Dangerous gets closer to his goal. However, working with the temple's energy presents new challenges and dangers. Each time he reaches a new level of the temple, his weapon is reset by the security protocols, forcing him to continuously develop new strategies to defend himself against the creatures.

After a long and strenuous battle, Dr. Dangerous finally locates the last batteries and repairs the remaining computers. The temple’s security system is deactivated, the aggressive energy subsides, and the creatures retreat, allowing the station to return to normal operation.

With control of the station restored and a new understanding of the temple's secrets, Dr. Dangerous returns to civilization. He has demonstrated that the Temple of Xol'Tan is more than just an ancient ruin—it is a place full of mysteries and untapped energy that could influence the world of tomorrow. Yet Dr. Dangerous knows that his discoveries are just the beginning of an even greater adventure.

Collectors Boxed Edition from Dr. Dangerous

extended version

Dr. Dangerous Boxed Version

You can buy it here:

Dr. Dangerous Boxed Version

The revised version of the floppy disk edition offers, among other things, new difficulty levels – Easy, Medium, and Hard – with adapted game mechanics for more variety. For the first time, checkpoints can be set at any time in Easy mode, making the game more accessible and convenient. At the same time, the classic appeal for pros is fully preserved in Hard mode.

Four brand-new levels expand the adventure and provide additional fun. The music has also been reworked: none other than Barry Leitch (known for his work on Lotus Turbo Challenge, among others) and ZEKAVEO, who already made a name for himself with the soundtrack to the Android game The Mystical Quest, are responsible for the new soundscape, giving the game a dense, atmospheric soundscape.

Minor visual adjustments have been made to make certain sections more coherent, and loading times have also been significantly improved.

Another highlight is the multilingual localization: In addition to English, the game is now also available in German, French, and Spanish.

The boxed version also features a new title screen, a retro-style printed manual, and other thoughtful details that make the physical release a special experience.

Hi, I've noticed a few typos in the game (my bought, boxed version), one of which I managed to capture. In this example, the words "checkpoints" appears twice in "...you can set checkpoints checkpoints with s."

Thank you for your support. I hadn't even noticed. I will correct it and upload it accordingly. If you discover anything else, please get in touch.

Umm, why does this Steam game look exactly like Dr. Dangerous?

Did they rip you off?

Thanks for the info. :). If you look at the description you will see that the graphic is by an artist called Ansimuz (Pixel Art) and this is freely available. The version of me was adapted to 32 colours, so that the graphic is usable for the Amiga. It's all in the credits.

Well they ripped someone off... :(

End of my run and Review of the free version (in French language)

If you can't play with your controller, look here:

Custom Controller Configuration | FS-UAE Amiga Emulator

After launch the game and press the X and Y buttons at the same time, in "Input Options" select your Controller, then "CD-32 PAD MODE" and finally "JOYSTICK MODE"

The Collectors Edition includes 4 additional levels, a short outro to the game, and a few other extras. ;)

I've always liked the Amiga and am happy to now be able to contribute games to this great device and keep the Amiga alive, and not just as a digital download. For those who would like a boxed version, it is also available as a collector's edition, or you can continue to support me with a voluntary donation.

It was really cool :)

Many thanks for all those who support me.

i ordered the physical version yesterday. I'm really excited about the extended version of Dr. Dangerous. A WHDLoad Version would be a nice thing.

Will there be a physical version of Tiny Pixel Adventure too?

(1 edit)

Thank you for your support. I hope you like the collector edition. To other collectors editions. I want to see how it goes and then decide whether there will be more. I hope for your continued support. :)

Great stuff thanks. Works great on handhelds with uae4arm. Love the graphics style, the music and the gameplay. Top stuff.

Rick dangerous-Metroid vibes certainly here. 1001 spikes and more.  Flashback vibes are there too. Music in intro has that Beast vibe.

All put together in great style, very competent.

Thank you very much. There will soon be a Boxed version for all collectors. There will be some changes in the game. Keep your eyes open. :)

As a gamer I'm learning about the Scorpion engine and how it can be used to make great indie Amiga games. Thanks for using this engine to make this game.

Consider me a noob when it comes to FS-UAE emulation. How would I launch the game in windowed mode in the Windows version? I like to launch these retro/older games in windowed mode to make them look better and create a cozy experience. Please help me with this, thank you.

Always nice to see new users of the scorpion engine. The engine is great and above all you can learn it quickly. Unfortunately I only use winuae. I have never used your version. I also prefer to play amiga games with my good old amiga so I have more retro feeling. :)

Hi sry that I have not been in touch for a while. But I have good news about a boxed version of Dr. Dangerous. I am currently working on this version. There will be new music, some new levels and a few other surprises. I'm trying to optimize the game as much as possible.

I haven't gotten very far yet, but I really like the game, great concept and execution.  One quick note/bug report: it seems like it crashes if you hit K on the start screen

Thank you for the information.  :)

Hey, I hope you don't mind, but I put Dr. Dangerous in the top 100 Amiga homebrew games of all time.

Thanks for showing the game on your channel. :)

My pleasure :)

Downloaded the game a while ago. Wanted to try it first before donate, so that is done now.  I like the combination of puzzle and platform action genre. It is a bit hard, so I think I would get too frustrated if playing this on real hardware. I played it on the A600GS which lets me save the game state as snapshots at any point, without that I think I'd be to frustrated to continue. Might be my joystick is to sensitive or I'm getting to old for gaming:)

Since I have the snapshots I dont really need those level codes. But I find it a bit odd that the level code is for the same level as you usually have nearly finsihed, instead of getting a level code for the next level at the end of each level.

Other than that the game is very playable and had nice graphics.

(1 edit)

The level codes are sometimes hidden at the beginning in the middle or at the end or are easily accessible. If you get a level code for the next level, there is no point in continuing to play the level. The level of difficulty is hard but doable. The number of levels is only 20, so the game is not too long. ;)

Thank you for the donations. This motivates you to plan further projects. :)

Thanks for your impression of the game. There will soon be a boxed version which will also be revised. There will also be difficulty levels and changes to the level codes. New levels will also be added.

Hello. Congratulations on this great game. I love it. I see there’s a label available for printing for the floppy disk, but not the box. The image you have on the website is really cool. Is there any chance you could also make it available for download? Thank you very much and Happy New Year!

I'm still thinking about whether I should make a boxed version. That's why I can't give you a template for the time being.

Oh! That would be great. I would buy a copy without hesitation. Thanks!

Fantastic!!!! I finally have the cover for my floppy

Send a pic I hope it's fit

(1 edit)

What are the controls for the windows emulated version?
I dunno what to do to even be able to play the game...

Use the arrow keys to move and ctrl to shoot and jump.

I can't even start the game, let alone control it. I'm just on the main screen and dunno what to do.

strg=fire and start

and arrows for movement

I got it going now. I actually had to manually change the control setup to use the keyboard. It was trying to use my gamepad/controller that I had plugged im. I found controller does work after changing some settings... but seems some actions still need to be done on the keyboard.

Hello! Would it be possible to have a screen of the cover like the one shown in the photo? Obviously for personal copy, only front side.

You mean the picture of the box? You can edit and use it with Photoshop.

Just published a full video review on our YouTube channel.

Thank you for the very good video about Dr. Dangerous. The game should remind you that there weren't always checkpoints. Many games are hard but I never liked that you could die your way through the levels. I kept the levels smaller because otherwise it's very frustrating when you have to start all over again. I don't find the challenge so difficult that you have to throw the joystick directly against the wall like in Rick dangerous. That's why I included the level codes, otherwise the game would be too difficult ;) My latest game will also be without checkpoints, but not quite as difficult. So let me surprise you.

I also have a lot of ideas for other games and not just platformers (my favorite).

(1 edit)

We took another look at the game in its final version which can be found in our recorded livestream starting at 01:54:14. It is and remains a very good game, even if it is a shame that you can only take one hit and there are no checkpoints within a level. 🙂

(+1)

Thanks for great game!

No problem. You are welcome to support me with other projects or for this one. :)

(1 edit)

I would like to see a port of "Nightmare In the Dark" ;-)

If I were to make a port it would be a giana Sisters port with the graphics from the 3 ds. But until then I have many other projects ...☺️😜

Didn't want to push you ! ;-)

Really good new Amiga game, great that you got the release version ready. I added it to my latest video "Gameplay of New Amiga Games from September 2024", which also includes all the other recently released Amiga games.

Thank you for showing it on your channel. I am always happy when someone appreciates my games and shows them to others. :)

(1 edit)

I'm on Level 18 and the game, almost at the end of the level, exit with the following error:

I play the game on fpga machine and both give that error, Minimig AGA on SiDi128 OS 3.2.2.1 and Apollo V4 Standalone OS 3.9  Core 10334_x14. I don't have yet tested it on real A1200/030.

OK, the point is this, but on real hardware 1200/030 no problem:

So the issue on fpga systems is probably due to some speed setting, I think. I will make other tests.
Thanks for your attention.

(1 edit)

Thanks for the message. I will increase the active actors and then the problem should be solved. The update will be uploaded as soon as possible with the name Hotfix 2

Many thanks, today I played the game on WinUAE and real A1200/030 and the issue is present as on fpga systems.
Thanks again for your quick reply.

update is online :)

Many thanks, time to play :)

I hope it works now. :)

Definitely it's one of the best Amiga games I played in 2024, I haven't finished it yet but I hope to soon.
Many thanks for this addictive game :)

Thank you for the nice review of the game.  :)

hail (Z)xol'tan

😂😜

Hi , After the update the game dosent work any more on theA500mini?

Do you have the latest firmware on the Amiga mini?

You must also unzip the rar file. There are instructions plus an lha file for the Amiga Mini.

hi :) yes I unzipped and pasted the  text in whd boot script. It worked with the previous version.

I have found the problem. I should not have renamed the LHA files. It was my mistake. Rename it like this "scorpion_dev.lha"

I will also change the file when downloading

That's it mate you solved it,  Great Game : )

Nice that it works again. Enjoy the game. :) Feel free to recommend it.

Hi,

really nice game, love it!
Just a question.. I dont know in which level I am exactly but at this point (screenshot) I can't move/jump over to the place I've marked. Any special trick here?

Here is a short video. Yes, the place is difficult but you can get over it :)

(1 edit)

That is strange... If I jump from there I always land on that wooden stair above. :-) I will try again.

And did you manage to get over the spikes?

(1 edit)

No, I didn't. I used WinUAE Savestates and retried a dozen times without success.
The spikes are not the problem, I do not reach them because my jump ends on that wooden stair.  Don't know if its a keyboard problem I am playing with. :-)

Thank you for this great game, here is my tribute !

(1 edit)

Thanks for the nice video. Enjoy the game. :)

You have a subscription from me. I love channels like this.

Thanks for the support and for rating the game.

A new project is also being planned.

I'm also looking forward to the continued support for the game and the following games ... :)

This is one awesome game! I'm in love with such "puzzle games" (not way near to meant to be negative!). Thanks!!

Fu**ing great release, we gotta cover that in BrewOtaku #004, even if we need to add more pages :)

Great game. But the final release won't load correctly on my A500. It always hangs after the Scorpion Engine Screen. V6 Hotfix1 worked correctly. On WinUAE it works.

(1 edit)

Thank for the information. I tried on my Amiga and it works.

Amiga 500 with 512kb extension Kickstart 1.3

I'll have another look at how I can make the game more stable.

(1 edit)

Thanks for your reply.

Small update: Without my accelerator card, it works.

But v6 Hotfix1 worked with my ACA500+. So it runs on an 68000, but not on 68HC000.

This may take up a little memory. The memory is full. I'll see if there's anything else I can do. :)

My A500 is rev.8 and is modded with 2MB of chip RAM.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a look at it and hopefully a solution can be found.

I'm finding the same thing with my Amiga, it won't get past the Scorpion screen

(1 edit)

It works wonderfully on my Amiga. Nothing would be changed on the Amiga. The only thing is my screen is broken, it has a green screen. :/

Great game. A friend of mine played it: ☢️🕹️💾👍

Thanks for playing. :)

You're welcome. Thanks for such a great game ... 😉

Cool game i hope   there will be an whdload installation.

this game is awesome! Thanks!
It would deserve a physical release... any chance to have it? :)

Must see how and if I will do it. :)

Please, do it if you can! :) I'm sure you will easily sell a bunch of 50 or even 100 boxes...
I'll keep my fingers crossed. :D
