You can download a file in one of a few formats (selectable below).

Adding files to your Kobo device

There are a number of options to transfer the downloaded file to your Kobo device. Not all methods are supported by all devices. The first method—listed below—is the simplest. For any of the below we recommend using the Kobo download option, though the epub option will also work (but has fewer features).

Adding files to your Kindle device

As best as we can tell there are two current methods of getting an ebook that wasn't purchased from Amazon on your kindle. They are as follows:

  • Send To Kindle

Amazon has made it confusing and not well documented to add books acquired from other sources to kindle devices. If you have an Amazon account associated with your Kindle device, the easiest method is likely to download the epub file (not the Kindle file) and use this form.

Unlike the USB method (below), the cover will be visible when using this method. However, the Kindle does not natively display Epub documents. As such, it will convert it to a different format, which could—we are not sure—result in a lower quality ebook production. You may wonder why they don't just allow upload of an azw3 (what we refer to as Kindle file format above) formatted document and not need the conversion. We wonder that too.

  • USB Cable

Another option is to move the files over from your computer using a USB cable. Amazon does not seem to have a help file for this method. To use this method you will need to download the Kindle file and follow these instructions:

    1. Select Kindle above, and click Download below. This will save an azw3 file of the issue to your computer.
    2. Using a USB cable, connect your Kindle to the computer you downloaded the azw3 file to. Your Kindle will appear as a USB drive that you can browse.
    3. Navigate to the documents folder on your Kindle device, then drag and drop the azw3 file into the documents or ebooks folder.
    4. Eject the Kindle from your computer using your system’s “Safely remove drive” option. Your ebook should now be visible.

Due to a bug in Kindle software (we really do recommend Kobo e-readers over Kindle), the cover will not appear on Kindle devices and a Kindle supplied default cover will be used.

Reading files on your computer/tablet/phone

Epub is a very commonly supported format. There are many programs available for all extant operating systems to read epub documents. If you already have software to read ebooks on your system, simply download the epub and open it in that software. If you do not already have e-reading software a quick search for “best free epub reading software for MacOS” (replacing MacOS with Windows, Linux, Unix, Android, iOS, etc. as needed) should get you to what you need.

Most computers have the ability to display a PDF file as well. It is a less flexible format, in that it does not reflow based on screen size, but can be a good choice for some. Especially given that the web browser you are viewing this website in is likely to support displaying PDF files. Our PDFs are formatted like books—you could potentially print your own book with them—and should be nice to read.
