Write your own chronicle in the Holy Roman Empire, starting in the year 1001 – a remake of the 1991 DOS classic, rebuilt for today.

You take command of one of 30 dynasties and lead it through the centuries: build up your land, marry off your children wisely (or catastrophically), forge alliances, break them again, and fight your way to the top, step by step. The greatest prize of all awaits at the end – the imperial crown. But the path there is entirely yours to walk.

What makes PC Kaiser special: no two games are ever the same. Every game starts on a randomly generated map, and every ruler's story writes itself. An heir dies young, a daughter married into another house suddenly inherits a foreign realm, an assassination strikes the emperor down in the middle of the election – and your game takes a turn you never saw coming. These are the stories you'll still be talking about long after.

The full version is exactly that demo – without the turn limit and on random maps. Play as long as you like, build real dynasties across generations, and carry your game all the way to the imperial crown and beyond. The full version is available as a download only.

Honestly: the game isn't 1.0 yet and it isn't perfect, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. It's entirely possible that the odd bug is still hiding somewhere, and the balancing is still being refined. I'm offering it anyway, because it's a complete, playable game that genuinely was a lot of fun for me during my own testing – and it's great to play with friends. Maybe you'll feel the same. If you find a bug, drop it in the comments and it'll go straight into the next version. That kind of feedback is exactly what makes the game better with every release.

Good to know:

• The full version comes as a Windows file (.exe). Unzip and run it. On first launch, Windows will show a warning → "More info" → "Run anyway". You have my word: no viruses.
• By the way, the demo is also available as a downloadable .exe. Save games from the demo can potentially be carried over into the full version, as long as the version number matches.
• Play on a PC with mouse and keyboard. The browser demo does not run on phones or tablets.
• The game was originally made in German, but I'm putting real effort into offering it fully in English too – by now almost everything is translated (only the in-game event texts are still German for the moment). In the Options menu you'll find an English on/off toggle; with English off, the game is shown in German. The starter tutorial is available in both German and English, and you can reach it – along with a wonderfully friendly storyteller who gently shows you the ropes – anytime via F1, where you can also re-read the storyteller's guidance or browse the wiki for tips.

Note on Windows & antivirus

This is a small indie game without an (expensive) code-signing certificate, so Windows may show an "Unknown publisher" warning on launch — that's normal and nothing to worry about:

• Just click "More info" → "Run anyway".
• The smoothest way is the itch app (itch.io's desktop app) — it launches the game without that prompt.

On first launch the game creates a "Songs" folder next to the .exe (drop your own music in there). During testing some antivirus tools flagged this file creation as a false positive — there are no viruses, promise. In this version the folder ships ready-made, so the warning shouldn't appear anymore.

Schreib Geschichte. Eine Dynastie. Ein Reich. Tausend Wege zur Macht.

Schreibe deine eigene Chronik im Heiligen Römischen Reich ab dem Jahr 1001 – ein Remake des DOS-Klassikers von 1991, neu gebaut für heute.

Du übernimmst eine von 30 Dynastien und führst sie durch die Jahrhunderte: Du baust dein Land auf, verheiratest deine Kinder klug (oder katastrophal), schmiedest Bündnisse, brichst sie wieder und kämpfst dich Stück für Stück an die Spitze. Am Ende winkt der größte Titel von allen – die Kaiserkrone. Aber der Weg dorthin gehört ganz dir.

Was PC Kaiser besonders macht: keine zwei Spiele sind gleich. Jede Partie startet auf einer zufällig erzeugten Karte, und jede Herrschergeschichte schreibt sich von selbst. Ein Erbe stirbt jung, eine eingeheiratete Tochter erbt plötzlich ein fremdes Reich, ein Attentat reißt den Kaiser mitten in der Wahl aus dem Leben – und schon nimmt deine Partie eine Wendung, die du nicht kommen sahst. Hier entstehen Geschichten, von denen du noch lange erzählst.

Das erwartet dich:

• Aufbau & Wirtschaft – Dörfer, Burgen, Felder, Häfen und Paläste errichten, Korn, Vieh und Taler im Gleichgewicht halten
• Dynastie-Politik – Heirat, Geburten, Erbfolge: jede Blutlinie ist einzigartig, jeder Tod ein Unikat
• Krieg – Truppen ausheben, Schlachten schlagen, ganze Länder annektieren oder eingliedern
• Intrigen – Spionage, Anschläge, Lösegeld und Verrat im Schatten
• Kurfürsten & Kaiserwahl – gewinne die Mächtigen für dich und steige zum Kaiser auf
• Hot-Seat-Mehrspieler – theoretisch bis zu 30 menschliche Spieler an einem Rechner, reihum auf demselben Thron

Spiel es, wie du willst. PC Kaiser ist ein Hot-Seat-Spiel für 1 bis 30 Personen an einem Rechner. Ob du allein eine Dynastie über Generationen führst, zu zweit mit je zwei Dynastien gegeneinander antrittst oder eine ganze Runde Freunde um den Thron streiten lasst – ihr entscheidet, wie ihr mein Spiel spielt.

Die Vollversion ist genau diese Demo – ohne das Rundenlimit und auf zufälligen Karten. Du spielst, so lange du willst, baust echte Dynastien über Generationen auf und führst deine Partie bis zur Kaiserkrone und darüber hinaus. Die Vollversion gibt es nur zum Download.

Ganz ehrlich: Das Spiel ist noch keine 1.0 und nicht perfekt, und das will ich auch gar nicht verstecken. Es kann gut sein, dass sich noch der eine oder andere Bug versteckt, und am Balancing wird noch gefeilt. Trotzdem biete ich es an, weil es ein vollwertiges, spielbares Spiel ist, das mir in den eigenen Tests selbst richtig Spaß gemacht hat – und das man wunderbar mit Freunden spielen kann. Vielleicht geht es dir ja genauso. Wenn du einen Bug findest, schreib ihn mir in die Kommentare, dann fließt er in die nächste Version ein. Genau dieses Feedback macht das Spiel mit jeder Version besser.

Gut zu wissen:

• Die Vollversion kommt als Windows-Datei (.exe). Entpacken und starten. Beim ersten Start zeigt Windows eine Warnung → "Weitere Informationen" → "Trotzdem ausführen". Ihr habt mein Wort: keine Viren.
• Übrigens gibt es auch die Demo als herunterladbare .exe. Spielstände aus der Demo lassen sich unter Umständen in die Vollversion übernehmen, solange die Versionsnummer übereinstimmt.
• Spielt am PC mit Maus und Tastatur. Die Browser-Demo läuft nicht auf Handys oder Tablets.
• Das Spiel ist ursprünglich auf Deutsch entstanden, aber ich gebe mir große Mühe, es auch vollständig auf Englisch anzubieten – inzwischen ist fast alles übersetzt (nur die Ereignis-Texte im Spiel sind vorerst noch deutsch). Im Optionen-Menü gibt es einen Schalter Englisch an/aus; mit Englisch aus wird das Spiel auf Deutsch angezeigt. Das Start-Tutorial gibt es auf Deutsch und Englisch – und ein herrlich freundlicher Herold führt euch behutsam durch das Spiel. Über F1 könnt ihr euch jederzeit die Ansprache des Herolds noch einmal durchlesen oder das Wiki durchforsten, um Tipps zu bekommen.

Hinweis zu Windows & Virenscanner

Das Spiel ist eine kleine Indie-Anwendung ohne (teure) Code-Signatur. Deshalb kann Windows beim Start „Unbekannter Herausgeber" anzeigen — das ist normal und kein Grund zur Sorge:

• Einfach auf „Weitere Informationen" → „Trotzdem ausführen" klicken.
• Am bequemsten läuft es über die itch-App (die Desktop-App von itch.io) — die startet das Spiel ohne diese Nachfrage.

Beim ersten Start legt das Spiel neben der Exe einen Ordner „Songs" an (dort kannst du eigene Musik ablegen). Manche Virenscanner meldeten dieses Anlegen im Test als Fehlalarm — es sind keine Viren enthalten, versprochen. In dieser Version ist der Ordner schon vorbereitet, die Meldung sollte also gar nicht mehr kommen.
