Open with, or opening file via terminal not working for Snap/Flatpak packages

Summary:

Open with does not work anymore on Ubuntu

Steps to reproduce:

Variant 1:

• open a "Files" navigator/explorer window
• right-click a svg file
• choose "Open With Other Application"
• select Inkscape

Variant 2:

Open via terminal (inkscape /home/user/myfile.svg)

(Variant 3: drag-and-drop --> separate issue #3624 )

What happened?

Nothing, or "File not found" error message

What should have happened?

Inkscape should have started

Status / Version info

• Snap <= 1.4.2 stable: confirmed
• Snap 1.4.2-rc candidate on Ubuntu 24.04: partly fixed
  • Drag-and-drop and "open with": works for /home and /media. Fails for some other paths like /usr/share/doc/. Upstream issue, can't be fixed by us.
  • Terminal: works for /home and /media but only if absolute paths are used. It fails e.g. for relative paths in subdirectories of /home.
• Flatpak
  • Drag-and-drop and "open with": Works at least for /home.
  • Terminal: Not supported by flatpak?
