Shell mode opens the Welcome / start up dialog

Steps to reproduce:

reset preferences
Launch inkscape in shell mode (inkscape --shell)

What happened?

Welcome dialog opens OR segfault if no display (Backtrace shows it happens when the dialog tries to open)

What should have happened?
