Have to send C-x twice to emacs

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- open emacs in iterm2
- attempt to send C-x to emacs. it won't display at the bottom left.
- attempt to send C-x to emacs. it will display.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect it to register C-x on the first try. I noticed then when trying to C-x C-c.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
OS X 10.6.6
iterm2 0.20.20110109
