Unicode private-range characters such as Apple symbol (U+f8ff) render as '?'

What steps will reproduce the problem?
Upgraded iTerm2 to 0.20.20110109
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Display of characters such as Apple logo option-shift-k appear as ? on local shell and <f8ff> when using ssh. I use unicode symbols as part of my shell prompt so is very visible.
Using older iTerm2, iTerm and Terminal display correctly. With same font and LANG setting - en_AU.UTF-8 and Menlo, Inconsolata or Vera.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Build 0.20.20110109 on 10.6.6
