Follow-up from "Add diffs streaming endpoint for compare"

The following discussion from !172404 (merged) should be addressed:

1. suggestion (non-blocking): I don't see any verifications of this option. We should either remove it or add a test for it.
2. suggestion (non-blocking): I don't see where we use extra_params. Should we remove it?
3. 500 error when params are not set
